Bordeaux chairman Jean-Louis Triaud has confirmed the club's interest in signing Diego Placente.
Les Girondins coach Laurent Blanc has been searching for a left full-back for a couple of months.
His first priority was Manchester United's Mikael Silvestre, but he proved too expensive.
Bordeaux officials then turned their attention to Toulouse's Jeremy Mathieu, but both their offers were rejected.
Finally, they have decided that Argentinean international Placente could be the right man for the job as the 31-year-old played at San Lorenzo last term but is now a free agent.
Experience
The key point of persuasion for Blanc is the defender's experience, having played in a UEFA Champions League final with Bayer Leverkusen in 2002.
Triaud confirmed the Argentinean's likely arrival, even though he is not sure if he will have to pay a fee:
He told
L'Equipe: "It is still complex and vague. You never really know with Argentinean clubs. Maybe he is free if he signs for another Argentinean side, or maybe we have to pay if he signs for a European side. We will know more soon.
"At first, we want to see him and for him to have a medical examination. Then, if everything goes off smoothly, he will sign his contract."
Alonso wanted
Meanwhile, the chairman also confirmed that the club's attacking midfielder Alejandro Alonso could sign for Monaco and link up with his former coach Ricardo.
The possible transfer comes after it is believed the 26-year-old Argentinean turned down Bordeaux's offer of a contract extension.
Speaking about the situation, Triaud added: "It is true, Alonso wants to join the Principality, where of course he will earn much more attractive wages.
"However, we haven't found any agreement with Monaco yet. Actually we haven't had any offer yet, but we wish a definitive transfer."
