Clarets striker thinks team can stay up

Burnley striker Steven Thompson insists his team-mates still believe they can save themselves from the relegation trapdoor. The Clarets edged closer to the drop at the weekend after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Thompson scored a second half consolation for Burnley, who are now four points behind fourth from bottom West Ham. The former Rangers and Cardiff City striker thinks that two wins from their final three league outings could be enough to stay up.

Belief

"As a professional you have to believe. If you didn't then you probably shouldn't be in a job should you?" he told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph. "We are capable of doing it, and we do believe we can do it. It's just whether we can put the words onto the pitch and turn them into performances. "We've got three games left and need to win two of them. "It's a difficult thing to do but we've got to keep going and believe we can do it because if we don't then you're as well just giving up."
