Defender Paul Dixon has returned to Dundee United after having his contract at Huddersfield terminated by mutual consent.

The Scotland international left-back joined Huddersfield from United in 2012 and is heading back to Tannadice after three-and-a-half years.

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell explained Dixon had become frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities recently, due to the form of Jack Robinson.

Powell said: "Paul is an experienced professional and wants to play regularly, but the form of Jack Robinson has kept him out of our side. He is still out of contract in the summer.

"There has been interest from another club in recent days. Paul came to me and expressed a strong desire to be released, reluctantly at this stage of the season, and return to Scotland as soon as possible.

"He did not want to wait until the summer - and we didn't want to stand in his way. Paul was a top professional - a dedicated player and he leaves the club with our best wishes."
