Motherwell have signed Blackburn defender Gavin Gunning on loan until the end of the season.

McCall pleased to bring in Blackburn defender

Motherwell have completed the signing of Blackburn Rovers defender Gavin Gunning on loan until the end of the season. Gunning has yet to be given a chance in the Blackburn side and has been allowed out to gain further first-team experience. The 20-year-old recently made two appearances during a loan spell at Bury and had stints at Rotherham United and Tranmere Rovers last season. He will now spend the remainder of the current campaign at Fir Park to boost the options at Well manager Stuart McCall's disposal. Gunning follows the same path as Blackburn team-mate Nick Blackman, who spent the first half of the season at Motherwell before joining Aberdeen on loan earlier in the transfer window.

Highly rated

McCall told the club's official website: "We have some really talented youngsters coming through on the left flank but they are not quite ready as yet. "Gavin is someone who is highly rated at Blackburn and, importantly, someone who has experience of being out on loan before. "Sometimes young lads can get overawed going out for the first time but given he's been at Tranmere, Rotherham and Bury means he'll have experienced different styles of football at different clubs." Gunning is eligible to play in Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden.
