Turkey boss casts eye over young Pompey ace

Young Portsmouth ace Nadir Ciftci is being tracked by Turkish national boss Guus Hiddink. The former Russia coach watched the 18-year-old in action against Hawks on Monday night and the pair afterwards held talks about possibly switching his national allegiance. The striker has played for Holland - the country of his birth - at Under 16 and Under 18 level but holds dual nationality. Pompey coach Guy Whittingham believes the teenager can push on, although he has to simplify his game. Whittingham told The News: "I imagine Guus Hiddink was watching Nadir. "We understood he was coming. We didn't get confirmation why it was, but we presume it was for Nadir. "He has played for Under 16s and Under 18s in the Dutch side. "I felt Nadir tried a little bit too hard at times, he's got to learn to simplify his game a little bit more and he will score more goals if he does that." Pompey boss Steve Cotterill had planned to send the teenager on loan to former club Cheltenham before the start of the season, but threw the teenager into action at the start of the campaign as he was short of options. Ciftci went on to score goals against Stevenage and Reading, although he has only featured once since the start of October after Cotterill bolstered his ranks.
