Sitting on bench frustrating for goalkeeper
Neil Alexander is hoping to take advantage of Allan McGregor's recent problems by claiming his starting position at both club and international level.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper has been thrust into the Rangers first-team after McGregor's two-week suspension for his actions while on international duty with Scotland.
Alexander believes he can impress manager Walter Smith in the coming games enough to be handed the number one spot permanently.
He stood in for McGregor when the first-choice keeper suffered a serious injury towards the end of last season. Dropping back down to the bench at the start of the current campaign has clearly left him frustrated.
"With having a taste of it last season and the success we had in the big games, all you want to do is play football," he said.
Frustrating
"I'm no different from any other player at the club. It's frustrating sitting on the bench and watching every game.
"But, when I get the opportunity, which I am getting at the moment, hopefully I can grab it with both hands.
"There are three of us vying for one position and only one of us can play so it is frustrating.
"Last season, I had a taste of first-team football, a taste of success, and that was great. I'm desperate for a bit more. The start of the season was really frustrating.
"Allan has done well throughout the season and deserved to play but I've got an opportunity to have a run of games and I'm just looking forward to every game.
Good Enough
"Hopefully, what I do is good enough to get a run in the team."
The former Cardiff keeper is concentrating on performing for his club side, but says he would welcome any interest from Scotland manager George Burley.
"First and foremost, my priority is to do a good job for Rangers," Alexander added.
"Whatever comes along with that is great. If it gets the attention of the Scotland manager and puts me in his thoughts, that's fantastic for me.
"But my main priority is to do the best job for Rangers Football Club."
