Craig Levein has urged Garry Kenneth not to get too down after missing out on his latest Scotland squad.
The Dundee United defender was one of the surprise absentees while Rangers veteran David Weir got the nod.
Kenneth took his share of the blame for Scotland's 3-0 defeat to Sweden while the Tangerines also suffered a heavy weekend defeat to SPL new boys Inverness.
The 23-year-old is one for the future and Levein insists that if he continues improving as he has done of late then he will earn a swift recall.
"Garry will have his day and if he keeps improving then he will come back in," explained Levein.
"It is dog-eat-dog and all I can do is give people an opportunity. It is then up to them to take it."
Experience vital
Also named in Levein's squad is experienced midfielder Paul Hartley and Scotland's boss says he would have faced Sweden had he joined Aberdeen sooner.
"As I said before, the only reason Paul was not in the squad against Sweden was that he did not find a club," he continued.
"Experience was the key with him. We do not have a natural holding midfield player but Paul's experience in the position is vital for me."
