Rangers caretaker manager Kenny McDowall explains why he's taken the decision to tender his resignation

Kenny McDowall says it was not an easy decision to resign as Rangers manager but admits he is happy to remain in charge while working his 12-month notice period.

McDowall, assistant to former boss Ally McCoist, followed the axed manager's lead by handing in his notice after just four matches in charge of the team.

The former Celtic reserve coach, who will take charge of the team at Cowdenbeath on Saturday, says he is comfortable with his decision to quit 'for family reasons'.

It wasn't an easy decision. It was one I discussed with the family and I just decided I was more than happy to honour my contract and work my 12 months.

"It wasn't an easy decision. It was one I discussed with the family and I just decided I was more than happy to honour my contract and work my 12 months," he said.

"But the last four years have been tough. Everybody is aware of that. It was time to step aside.

"I've been nearly 18 years at the Old Firm. That's quite a long time and it does take its toll on you. I will have a break probably, but we will see.

"This is a massive job and it's an absolute honour to be sitting here as caretaker. That's what made it such a difficult decision. To put my notice in wasn't easy but I just feel it was right for me and my family."

Asked if his time in charge of the team had been stressful, he added: "Walter Smith brought me here as first team coach eight years ago and all of a sudden I am caretaker manager.

"I'm then looking around wondering where everyone has gone, so it's just a bit strange. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic experience and I've come to a decision based on me and my family."
