Hibs run riot at Ibrox

Hibernian completed a hat-trick of wins over Rangers after a stunning 3-0 victory at Ibrox.

Hibernian completed a hat-trick of wins over Rangers after a stunning 3-0 victory at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup.

After the hosts wasted several chances in the first half, Garry O'Connor, Ivan Sproule and Chris Killen scored in the second half to send Tony Mowbray's men into the quarter finals.

Hibs midfielder Kevin Thomson lasted just six minutes of the game after being stretchered off with an injury picked up when collecting a booking for a foul on Barry Ferguson.

Rangers should have taken the lead on 17 minutes when Thomas Buffel's good awareness saw him pull the ball back for Kris Boyd, but the in-form striker's diving header was wide of the target.

A Chris Burke cross was glanced wide by Peter Lovenkrands, while Gers defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos headed just past his own post.

Bob Malcolm was then agonisingly close to an opening goal for the hosts when his swerving shot was tipped on to the bar by Hibs keeper Simon Brown.

O'Connor shot at Ronald Waterreus before, at the end of the first half, Boyd had another good opportunity only to mis-direct his header.

After the break, though, Rangers fell to pieces and they slipped behind on 50 minutes when Sproule's cross to the far post was headed in from close range by O'Connor.

Sproule turned goalscorer on 59 minutes when he collected a long ball and drilled a low shot inside the post.

Rangers saw a lifeline taken away from them two minutes later when Kyrgiakos' header was disallowed after Boyd obstructed the Hibs keeper.

With Rangers pressing, Hibs netted a third goal on 78 minutes when substitute Killen rolled the ball home after his first attempt had been saved by Waterreus.

O'Connor could have had his second goal of the game on 81 minutes, but his precise attempt was pushed away by Waterreus.
