Celtic are three points clear of second-placed Aberdeen but Charlie Mulgrew has said Celtic will need to be at their best to beat their title rivals

Charlie Mulgrew admits he has not given up on returning to the Celtic line-up in time for next month's Scottish League Cup final against Dundee United at Hampden Park.

The Scotland defender has been confined to the sidelines for two months with a knee injury but admits he is just two weeks away from training and has an outside chance of facing Jackie McNamara's side on March 15.

Mulgrew has had to sit and watch as his team-mates maintain their interest on four fronts and is now desperate to play his part in 'the business end of the season'.

"The plan now is to be training in a couple of weeks and whether the final comes a bit early for me we will just have to wait and see," he said.

"It's been disappointing, and a long road but there is now light at the end of the tunnel and I am delighted to be back running outside and I can see an end goal of getting back training. It has been difficult but you just have to get on with it and work as hard as you can to get fit.

"It is coming to the business end of the season and there are a lot of big games coming up. It's disappointing to miss them but I am over that and now looking forward.

"Everyone will be pushing each other for starts and that will really stand us in good stead. I'm desperate to be involved and I'm doing everything I can to get back without rushing things.

"We have a good squad, we're not getting too carried away and just taking each game as it comes. Everyone is ready now to fight for their place and play their part in the run-in."
