Maloney talks concern Strachan

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has admitted Shaun Maloney's contract talks are stalling.

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has admitted that he is concerned regarding Shaun Maloney's future, after talks about a contract extension broke down.

The 23-year-old is held in high regard, after he was named both Player and Young Player of the Year last season by his fellow professionals.

Maloney's present deal runs out at the end of the current season, but so far he and his club have struggled to strike a deal.

"They [contract talks] are stalling, as they say in business," admitted Strachan.

"Peter Lawwell [chief executive] and myself were talking about it. It's just business, a game you play, but you need to watch out because the game can become dangerous.

"We've seen that here and at other clubs."

Maloney has found himself on the bench in recent weeks following his return from a groin injury, but Strachan has explained that his lack of presence in the starting line-up is due to the strong performances of his team-mates.

"Shaun's mostly come on as a substitute, but the press made Aidan [McGeady] player of the month.

"It's circumstances sometimes. He's been great at training, his fitness levels are fantastic, but I can't keep everybody happy.

"Although I can't keep them all happy, I can try and make them understand.

"Usually, when they have a think about it, they understand."
