McNamara injury fear

Martin O'Neill is worried Jackie McNamara has suffered a serious ankle injury.

Martin O'Neill is worried Jackie McNamara suffered a serious ankle injury in Celtic's UEFA Champions League defeat to Barcelona.

McNamara twisted his ankle awkwardly after deflecting Ludovic Giuly's shot beyond goalkeeper David Marshall for Barca's second goal in the 3-1 success.

The experienced defender was immediately substituted and O'Neill fears McNamara has picked up a severe injury.

"Jackie has gone over on his ankle and he will have scans tomorrow but it is not looking fantastic at the minute," conceded O'Neill.

Celtic were outplayed for much of the contest at Parkhead and salt was rubbed in to the wounds when Bhoys legend Henrik Larsson scored the third goal in the closing ten minutes.

Larsson latched on to a mistake from Alan Thompson and O'Neill displayed humour in the aftermath of the defeat.

O'Neill added: "He (Larsson) came on and scored and he has been a good friend of Alan Thompson's over the years. So Alan decided to make it a bit easier for him.

"But our players gave everything tonight and we had them on the rack for a while."

Returning idol Larsson admits he was concerned when Chris Sutton levelled the scores just before the half hour, and just prior to his own entrance.

"I thought we started the game well and we got the goal," said Larsson.

"I know how Celtic work and when they go one goal down they never give up. Chris scored a great goal to get back in the game.

"I was warming up at the time and I thought it was going to be really tough with all the fans in the park getting behind the team again. and trying to build on that.

"Fortunately for us we managed to get 2-1 up and then I got the third one."
