Well boss surprised at pre-contract speculation

Motherwell's interim boss Craig Brown doubts whether Paul Slane has signed a pre-contract with Celtic. The Bhoys have been linked with a move for the talented teenager, who is yet to commit his long-term future to the club. Well offered the youngster new and improved terms, however, as it stands he is out of contract at the end of the season. Brown is currently overseeing Motherwell's first-team following Jim Gannon's sacking and believes Celtic would not agree a deal with any player without getting in touch his club. The former Preston and Scotland tactician also revealed Slane has been ill recently and does not believe he would have been in a position to sign anything elsewhere.

Rumour factory

"I've heard rumours to that effect but Paul has been ill the last couple of days, genuinely," Brown said. "Hopefully he will be back and we can have a chat with him. "We haven't had any contact from Celtic and I do think that they would have the courtesy to phone and say to someone in the club that they were going to put one of our players on a pre-contract. "So I would think it's most unlike Celtic. I would think that's the rumour factory in operation."
