Steve Banks on Gordon stay

Hearts goalkeeper Steve Banks has revealed his surprise at being asked to start Monday night's derby.

Surprise call-up

Hearts goalkeeper Steve Banks has revealed his surprise at being asked to start Monday night's Edinburgh derby defeat to Hibernian. Banks only learnt of his promotion to Hearts' starting line-up when the much coveted Craig Gordon failed to appear for training. The Scotland international, reportedly a target for Sunderland, Aston Villa and Manchester City, travelled south to discuss a move with an as yet unnamed club. Banks, who has played only a handful of games in his two years at the club, conceded it was a surprise to be given opportunity to impress.

No-show

"I came into training in the morning and Craig never turned up. It was said that he was elsewhere speaking to other people," said Banks. "So without really being told - we have nobody else - it was going to be me playing. "We have got nobody else. It has been a tough situation but the lads are honest enough and we will work hard enough and we'll bounce back. "He (Gordon) is obviously a busy boy at the moment but he sent me a text to say good luck."
