Barnsley manager Keith Hill has confirmed he plans to offer John Rooney a permanent contract, subject to international clearance.
The 21-year-old midfielder is the brother of Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney and his last club was American side Orlando City.
Although the paperwork is unlikely to be finalised prior to Saturday's game at Charlton, Hill is happy to do the deal after the youngster impressed during a month-long trial at Oakwell.
"John Rooney is going to sign with us until the end of the season," Hill told the Barnsley Chronicle.
"He's worth taking a punt on and we can develop him. I'm not sure how long it will take for the international clearance to come through."
Rooney has previously had stints with Macclesfield Town and New York Red Bulls.
