Birmingham have asked MK Dons for permission to speak to Karl Robinson over their managerial vacancy, according to Sky sources

The St Andrew's club sacked Lee Clark on Monday following a poor start to the season and are hoping to agree terms with 34-year-old Liverpudlian Robinson, who has impressed at Stadium MK since taking the reins in 2010.

Having only narrowly escaped relegation to League One last year, Birmingham's Championship campaign has begun poorly and they currently lie just one place above the relegation zone with 11 points from their 12 games - resulting in the departure of Clark after two-and-a-half years at the helm.

Robinson, who failed to win professional terms as a player despite youth team spells with Everton, Swindon and Blackpool, has made a name for himself as a manager after becoming the youngest boss in the Football League when he was promoted from assistant in May 2010.

Arguably the biggest night of Robinson's career was captured by the Sky Sports cameras earlier in the season, when the Dons sent Manchester United crashing out of the League Cup with an emphatic 4-1 victory in front of the jubilant home fans.
