League games given go-ahead

The Football League has confirmed that all its games in London will go ahead this weekend.

All this weekend's fixtures to be played despite civil unrest

The Football League has confirmed that all its games in London will go ahead this weekend. However, the League Two clash between Cheltenham and Swindon has been postponed on the advice of Gloucestershire Police. The civil unrest that spread from the capital across the country caused England's game against Holland at Wembley to be called off. Several of this week's Carling Cup games were postponed, along with Saturday's Premier League game between Tottenham and Everton. But it has been decided that none of this weekend's Championship, League One and League Two games in London will be affected. "Following ongoing discussions with the Metropolitan Police, statutory authorities and clubs in London, the Football League can confirm that all League games in the capital will go ahead as scheduled this weekend," read a statement on their official website.

Supporter safety

"The Football League has worked closely with the authorities and London-based clubs throughout the recent civil unrest to ensure matches are staged in accordance with supporter safety. "Acting on current information from the authorities, there is no reason to believe matches outside of London will be affected at this time."

Cheltenham match off

Despite that statement, hours later it was confirmed that Cheltenham's home game against Swindon would have to be postponed. In a statement issued on Cheltenham's official website, club secretary Paul Godfrey said: "Obviously we're disappointed because Saturday was going to be a great occasion and should have been a good match. "However, security and safety at the match is paramount and we understand that, because of the need to focus police resources elsewhere, it will not be possible to deploy the number of officers that would normally be required for this fixture. "For that reason, police have advised us that the match should be postponed on safety grounds and, following consultations with the Football League, this is the decision that has been taken reluctantly but in the best interests of everybody concerned."
