Hartlepool's new manager Ronnie Moore says he is taking on "the biggest job in English football" as he prepares to take charge of the club for the first time.

Moore, who was dismissed by Tranmere Rovers in April after he admitted breaking FA betting rules, takes over with Hartlepool bottom of League Two, six points behind Carlisle United.

Pools removed Paul Murray from his post earlier this month after an FA Cup defeat by non-league Blyth Spartans and their last league game ended in a 4-0 defeat by Burton.

Moore told Sky Sports News HQ: "This is a fantastic opportunity although people might say you are a bit mad; six points adrift but if you look at the goal difference, it's probably seven.

"But if you were top of the league, you wouldn't be asked to do the job. I come in here with my eyes open, there's new owners (TMH 2014 Ltd) of the club so that could just help us to survive this season and I'm sure next season we can be pushing at the right end of the table.

"Is it the biggest job in English football? Yes, I think it is. If you look at where we are, at the bottom of the league, it doesn't get any worse. But it can only get better as the song goes.

"I watched them against Burton on Saturday, bottom versus second top, and there was nothing in it in the first half. Second half we conceded two goals and collapsed like a pack of cards so I've got to get that right.

"There is no leader on the park at the moment so hopefully when the window opens in January we can bring one or two players who give us that. The new owners want to take the club forward and therefore it's important that I get things right on the pitch. That's the key to the future."

Moore will take charge of the team for the first time this weekend when they host Oxford United.
