Veteran striker will spend more time coaching

Darlington manager Colin Todd has admitted Dean Windass will be spending more time on the touchline in the coming weeks. The veteran striker joined the North East club as player-assistant manager over the summer but has found it tough to combine the two roles. Windass has yet to find the net in five appearances for his new club and missed a late penalty in the defeat by Bury, with Darlington struggling badly at the foot of the League Two table. Todd's side have just one point to show from their opening six matches and the Quakers boss has admitted that Windass, who will hang up his boots at the end of the season, will be coaching more and playing less for the foreseeable future.

Difficult

He told the Northern Echo: "Dean is 40-years-old and has come to the football club to learn management. "He is finding it difficult and the time has come where he has to start adapting to the art of management. "There will be a time when he will play again but I think the time has come for him to concentrate on being an assistant manager. "He would be the first to say he hasn't performed anywhere near the level people were expecting of him."
Spine
Meanwhile, captain Steve Foster has called on the Darlo squad to raise their game as they look to overcome a sorry start to the campaign. Saturday's dismal 3-0 defeat at the hands of managerless Lincoln leave the club rooted to the foot of the League Two table. Foster said: "Everyone at the club has got to have a look at themselves and ask 'have I done enough when I've been on the pitch when I've been given the opportunity? Have I done enough to warrant being in the side'. "Perhaps that hasn't been in the case. "We might have a good spine in the side but names on a teamsheet mean nothing unless you put things into practice."
