Defender makes switch from League of Ireland side Derry City

Danny Lafferty has joined Burnley from Derry City after a successful trial at Turf Moor. The 22-year-old started his career at Celtic, but returned to Northern Ireland after being released by the Glasgow club. He joined his hometown club in 2010 and made 46 appearances in the League of Ireland scoring seven times. The Northern Ireland Under-21 international had trials at Derby and Brighton before impressing Clarets boss Eddie Howe in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wolves last week. He will join on a two-and-a-half-year deal, subject to international clearance. Howe said: "He's a player we have known about for a while. We had a look at him for a week in training and he impressed us. "It's the close season in Ireland so he's a bit behind in fitness work and we have a bit of work to do to get him up to speed. "It is a big jump for him from the level that he's played at, but he's had a good grounding at Celtic. You can see he's had a good education. He's got a lovely left foot and he loves to get forward. "He's a really good footballer and he fits very much into our philosophy. He's one for the future but is also in our thoughts for now."
