Former England international set to hang up his boots

Bournemouth midfielder Darren Anderton has announced that he will call time on his illustrious career this Saturday. The former England international, who won 30 caps for his country, has decided to hang up his boots after 18 years in the game. He made a name for himself at Portsmouth in the early 1990s, before going on to take in spells at Tottenham, Birmingham and Wolves. He moved back to the South Coast in 2006 and signed a new one-year deal with the Cherries over the summer. However, the 36-year-old has opted not to see out that contract and will bow out following Bournemouth's home clash with Chester this weekend.

"I have enjoyed every minute I have spent at Bournemouth, but before it gets to the stage where I don't enjoy it anymore, I want to call it a day," Anderton told the club's official website. "It's been a hard decision to make, but the lads are doing great and they will be absolutely fine. "When I first came here, I thought it would be just for a year, so it has been fantastic to play so long. "I was finding training hard work and rather than just slogging on and not enjoying it, I have decided to make this decision. Saturday will be a sad day for me and I hope I can finish with a win. "I would like to thank all the supporters for the fantastic backing I have had since my first minute at the club."
