Sky Bet Championship: Forest boss Dougie Freedman wants further improvements

Nottingham Forest manager Dougie Freedman called for further improvements after the 3-2 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Forest clinched only a second win in their last 11 Sky Bet Championship games to give the Scot a perfect start after he took over the reins from Stuart Pearce on an 18-month contract on Sunday.

But the former Crystal Palace and Bolton chief said it was very much a matter of taking it one game at a time, and that he is preferring at the moment to "still look over my shoulder".

Second-half goals from Henri Lansbury and Ben Osborne turned the game in Forest's favour after Danny Collins had cancelled out an opener by Brighton top-scorer Lewis Dunk.

Debutant Israeli midfielder Beram Kayal, signed for £325,000 from Celtic, came off the bench to score in the last minute for the Seagulls, who have now won only one of their last seven home league games.

Freedman reiterated that he was not a "magician" as he begins the task of arresting Forest's slump in form.

He said: "It's the same mindset in that I'm still looking over my shoulder. It's one game at a time. It could have been better, we could have got a clean sheet.

"We can improve but I know the group of players that I have got and we will work on things.

"I'm not a magician but I've got a lot of experience at this level. It's great for a coach to work with a bunch of players and that will build confidence."

Freedman has told his squad that they all have a clean slate and a chance to impress.

He added: "It's all about the team. The team is the important thing and getting back to winning ways is nice for the players and the fans."

Brighton boss Chris Hughton blamed conceding goals at "bad times" for his side's second successive defeat.

Albion's only two clean sheets at home have been against bottom of the table teams Blackpool and Wigan, and Hughton admitted: "We conceded goals at bad times.

"It was a game when we had a lot of possession and Forest sat back and played on the counter attack.

"We have to be resilient and in this game we were not. It was disappointing that Forest equalised so soon after we went ahead and we conceded a poor goal."

Brighton have one of the bleakest home records in the country with six defeats by the odd goal and Hughton says it is vital that this improves.

The former Newcastle, Birmingham and Norwich boss added: "We will certainly need to use this squad. When you are up against teams, particularly at home, you have to be resilient.

"Forest won the game but they didn't have many close-cut opportunities over the 90 minutes. Margins at the moment are not going our way."

Seagulls midfielder Solly March faces another lay-off after being forced off with a calf injury in the first half following a challenge by Daniel Fox.

Hughton felt referee Christopher Sarginson was too "lenient" in general, and said: "The referee was too lenient today. It was a poor challenge on Solly and it was studs down the calf.

"Solly has been out for a long time with a stress fracture of the back and this is unfortunate for him. He will be very sore on Sunday morning."
