FL72 Review: Don Goodman reviews the weekend's Football League stories

Each week, Sky Sports experts review the Football League action on FL72. Check out Don Goodman's thoughts on the latest news...

Bob Peeters sacking seems premature

DON SAYS: Twenty-five league games is not long enough in all seriousness.

I am not quite sure what Charlton’s expectations are. I would have thought survival was their remit before a ball was kicked this season, with an outside chance of maybe a play-off spot, and that is exactly where they are at.

Cameron Jerome scored a late winner as the presence of new boss Alex Neil helped inspire 10-man Norwich to a surprise 2-1 win at Bournemouth

They are mid-table, and in no real danger of getting relegated, and if they can put some kind of positive run together, you never know.

They are very fine margins. Charlton had chances to get themselves in front against Brighton, and all you need is one to go in and you can possibly get something. Then you go and concede a goal and everything changes.

There are no easy games in the Championship anyway, but it won’t be especially easy for the new manager to come in with two away games coming up.

Charlton are drawing a lot, and not winning a lot of football matches, and that is a habit they need to get out of, and something that needs to change quickly.

Neil off to a flyer with win

DON SAYS: Alex Neil will be the first to admit that it is a huge opportunity for him, but a huge gamble that Norwich City are taking by appointing him as manager.

Although I understand Mike Phelan was heavily responsible for the result at Bournemouth, to go away from home and beat the division’s form team has got to breed confidence.

It is a big job and totally different to the SPFL, where he has been plying his trade.

Now he is at a club that is expected to be challenging for promotion to the Premier League and with that comes pressure. If results don’t go in a positive way we have seen what happens, especially in the Championship.

Derby moved back into the automatic promotion places as Chris Martin secured a 1-0 over Ipswich at Portman Road

Derby show maturity in 1-0 victory

DON SAYS: Derby managed the game against Ipswich very well. They came under quite a bit of pressure early in the first-half, but slowly they grew into the game.

They kept the ball much better than Ipswich and once they took the lead, that is where Steve McClaren will be very pleased, as that is when they took control, and restricted Ipswich to very few chances.

It was a much more mature performance than we saw live on Sky Sports a few weeks ago at Middlesbrough.

Squad strength key to Bristol City win

DON SAYS: Steve Cotterill will be hoping he can keep hold of Matt Smith. He was a handful when he was in League One at Oldham Athletic, but although he couldn’t quite make it happen at Leeds United, at this level he can score goals, and a lot of them.

Even with all their injuries, there is real strength in depth, which showed in the win over Notts County. Only MK Dons have scored more goals, and with one of the best defences in the league, there is a real recipe for success at Bristol City.

Burton rolling on under Hasselbaink

DON SAYS: Twenty points from nine games in charge. If you keep that ratio going then Burton Albion could finally become a League One club.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will be delighted with the application and the desire shown by his players.

They have played the clubs that are in and around them already, Shrewsbury a couple of times, Luton, etc and they have come out of that difficult run with an awful lot of points and they are flying at the moment.
