Sky Bet Championship: Charlton boss Bob Peeters defiant after defeat to Brighton

Charlton manager Bob Peeters believes the fans who called for him to resign following the 1-0 home defeat by Brighton are being unfair.

The Addicks were booed off after Rohan Ince's 62nd-minute strike sealed victory for Albion in new manager Chris Hughton's first league game in charge.

A small section of the home support were also calling for Peeters to be removed from his post but the Belgian was defiant.

Chris Hughton's flying start as Brighton boss continued as Rohan Ince's first senior goal earned a 1-0 victory over Charlton.

He said: "If you don't get the results I know people are not happy. When you have a 20,000 crowd always one or two will shout.

"We can only do the best we can. We always try to play football whether we win or lose. Again, you need a result to get a little breather.

"At the beginning of the season we had the luck a little bit, like the last minute against Wigan where we won by a deflected ball. That's the luck we lack at this moment and we can't do anything about it.

"You can be negative or positive about it. The only thing is we need to work hard and try to get a result."

Luck certainly deserted Charlton in the build-up to the goal as Chris Solly saw a 25-yarder bounce off the Brighton bar just seconds before Andre Bikey fouled Craig Mackail-Smith for the fateful free-kick which was delivered to the back post by Solly March for Ince to head home.

Peeters added: "The turning point was when we hit the bar a few seconds before we gave a foul away. It was unnecessary and they scored a goal. From that moment we knew they were going to defend with everything they had.

"At this moment the ball is not really rolling for us. You concede a set-piece and you concede a goal. That hurts. They boys are working very hard but they aren't getting rewarded and that's a big pain."

Charlton dropped to 14th place as Brighton moved three points clear of the relegation zone and up to 19th.

It was also a second successive victory under Hughton, who took over from Sami Hyypia before last week's 2-0 FA cup victory at Brentford.

Hughton said: "Fortunately when I came in we were on a decent run anyway with a draw and a win, so it was very much about keeping that mentality and the players have responded very well.

"The more clean sheets you can have the more chances you have of winning football matches. In both games we have been under pressure. At Brentford we rode our luck a little bit and sometimes you need something going for you.

"Before we scored Charlton had a good opportunity that hit the crossbar and sometimes you need the little things to go for you.

"I've tried to get a good balance. They have been quite an expansive team and are able to pass this football around and keep possession. I don't want to take too much of that away from them but at times we need to be more compact and tougher to beat."
