Leaders Southampton and West Ham both suffered shock defeats in the Championship on Saturday afternoon. Elsewhere, Middlesbrough closed the gap on the top two, Leeds paid a fitting tribute to Gary Speed, Nigel Pearson endured a miserable return to Hull City and the pressure mounted on Ipswich boss Paul Jewell. Peterborough and Barnsley were involved in a seven-goal thriller, Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton picked up a home win, Blackpool got back to winning ways and Brighton left it late to return to the play-off positions. Nigel Adkins' leaders, Southampton, lost for successive weekends after Doncaster climbed off the foot of the table with just a second home league win of the season courtesy of a 1-0 victory.

Disappointment

Sam Allardyce's West Ham also suffered defeat, with Burnley, who sat 15th at kick-off, shocking Upton Park with a 2-1 win which saw Eddie Howe's men continue to build momentum by recording a third successive victory. In the evening game, Malaury Martin's spectacular injury-time free-kick ended Bristol City's recent unbeaten run and moved Middlesbrough up to third in the table following a 1-0 win, which puts them five points behind the leaders. Robert Snodgrass struck twice, as the memory of Gary Speed served to inspire Leeds to a 2-0 win over Millwall at Elland Road in the lunchtime kick-off. Pearson's return to the KC Stadium ended in disappointment for the Leicester boss, as he saw his side's recent resurgence halted by former club Hull Cityin a 2-1 defeat, which included a red card for Matt Mills. The pressure mounted on Ipswich boss Paul Jewell after his side slumped to a seventh straight league defeat following a 2-1 loss to Watford at Portman Road.
Remarkable
Peterborough staged a remarkable second-half fightback, as they came from three goals down to draw level with Barnsley at London Road, but their hard work was undone in a 4-3 defeat after they threw away the point when conceding a fourth. Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton picked up his first win at Fratton Park following a 2-1 win which sent Coventry to the bottom of the table. Blackpool got back to winning ways after Callum McManaman's excellent goal ended a three-game run without a victory in a 1-0 success over Reading at Bloomfield Road. Will Buckley's injury-time goal settled a dreadful match between Brighton and Nottingham Forest at The Amex, with the home side picking up a 1-0 win.
