Brighton manager explains strategy to gain top-flight promotion

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet is determined to lead his team to the Premier League but has asked everyone at the club to remain patient. The Seagulls are currently 10th in the Championship table with 23 points from 16 matches, just two points behind Crystal Palace, who are sixth and occupy the final play-off slot. Poyet, though, has tempered hype that Brighton can play in the top-flight as early as next season and explains that he is eyeing long-term success at the Amex Stadium. "I want to manage at the top and that means Premier League," he told the club's official website. "The aim for me is to get there without going crazy as a club, though. "Getting to the Premier League does not need to happen now but within the next few years we need to get there.

Competitive

"I worry about what's best for the club and that's something that I talk a lot with the chairman [Tony Bloom] about. We do that to make sure that we plan things the right way for when the time arrives. "I know that the fans and people close to the club just want to be in the Premier League straight away but for a manager it's better to spend one, two or three years in the Championship before going into the Premier League, because you need to be ready when you go up. We would want to stay there. "We want to be competitive in the Premier League but if that doesn't happen, you will be straight down. "There are plenty of teams who went up, started very well but it didn't work in the end because it's about all 38 games, not just the first 10. "When you don't have the solid base, it's not going to work sooner or later, because the other teams are Premier League. I want to make sure that we are ready."
