Sky Bet Championship: Jose Riga believes Ishmael Miller is key to Blackpool's hopes

Blackpool boss Jose Riga believes Ishmael Miller is rediscovering previous form after shining in their first win of the season last Friday.

The 27-year-old striker was the Seasiders' stand-out performer in the 1-0 triumph over Cardiff in front of the television cameras, which ended the club's six-month search for three points.

The Bluebirds never got to grips with the lively Miller and Riga is optimistic he can prove a key figure in Blackpool's season.

Miller has experienced something of a nomadic career to date but has a good track record in the second tier.

"It's his level," Riga said of his performance on Friday night.

"When I spoke to him for the first time, I said it's not normal that at the moment you forget yourself and you cannot recognise this player.

"What you did in the past, you can still do it. But it's up to you; I can just give advice.

"I see him through the games improving and it is normal because I see him for five weeks (in the summer) doing nothing.

"I want to remember one thing in the Championship - it is a tough competition. Maybe the most important moment in the season is the pre-season preparation because you have to get fit and then you stay in the rhythm of the game.

"After that you are just looking to stay fit. But you have to be fit because you do not have a lot of time.

"Okay you have the international break but most of the time it is also to be able to give some rest, psychologically and physically.

"He's improving but for all of us, the most important thing is not to reach this level but to stay at this level. To be able to stay you have to do more... so he has to do more!"
