Rochdale have snapped up Grimsby Town full-back Tom Newey on loan until the end of the season.

Full-back one of three players to leave Blundell Park

Rochdale have snapped up Grimsby Town full-back Tom Newey on loan until the end of the season. Newey was recently told by Grimsby boss Mike Newell that he was not part of his long-term plans at Blundell Park. He has now swapped a relegation fight with the Mariners for a promotion push with Rochdale after completing his move to Spotland. The 26-year-old had made in excess of 160 appearances for Grimsby since joining the club in 2005 from Cambridge United. In addition to Newey leaving Grimsby, Newell has also cancelled the contracts of goalkeeping duo Phil Barnes and Gary Montgomery. Meanwhile, Newell will cast an eye over trialists Jermeel Baptiste, Ryan Hall, Dominic Rhone and Troy Powell in the reserves' game with Hartlepool United on Wednesday.
