Railwaymen sign Algerian

Crewe Alexandra have signed Algerian international defender Madjid Bougherra.

Crewe Alexandra have signed Algerian international Madjid Bougherra for the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old arrives at Gresty Road from French Ligue 2 side Gueugnon after struggling to get regular first-team action with the club.

The centre back, who can also play in midfield, impressed Railwaymen boss Dario Gradi while on trial, having had a similar trial spell in Greece with Kallithea.

The North African is expected to appear in Crewe's reserves on Wednesday, with Gradi delighted to secure Bougherra's services.

"Madjid impressed when he was here training with us for a few days and then he played well against Port Vale in a reserve game," Gradi told the club's official website.

"We had to make a quick decision on him and we have.

"He has a physical presence and has a bit about him. He was organising others around him and has that confidence.

"He looks to be a leader and we need a few more of those."

Bougherra's arrival comes as midfielder Ben Rix joins League One side Bournemouth on a month's loan after impressing The Cherries during a trial spell.

Rix has found first-team opportunities at Crewe limited, having been on loan at Nationwide Conference club Scarborough back in the autumn.

The midfielder will hope a move to the South Coast club will be a boost to his career.
