Edwards leaves Crewe

Crewe Alexandra have cancelled striker Paul Edwards's deal by mutual consent.

Crewe Alexandra have cancelled the contract of striker Paul Edwards by mutual consent.

The 22-year-old leaves Gresty Road after failing to make an impact following his graduation from the club's youth ranks.

Railwaymen boss Dario Gradi revealed the hit-man may step away from football after struggling to make any kind of impression with The Alex in recent seasons.

"He has dropped down the pecking order so far that he couldn't even get in the reserves," Gradi told the club's official website.

"It's a shame for him but I think he has had enough and is planning to take a break from football.

"He didn't have the encouragement to keep going because he wasn't doing well enough to get in the team.

"I think he might try again in non-league. For the time being though, I believe he is planning to go away for Christmas."

Meanwhile, Crewe may be without the services of midfielder Justin Cochrane for some time, with suspicions he has contracted shingles.

The former Hayes player was sent home from the club after reporting a rash and is expected to see a doctor this week to determine if he has contracted the adult form of chicken pox.

A positive diagnosis would rule Cochrane out of Saturday's trip to Wolves and possibly an even longer spell.
