Davis admits Brown would not have been fit enough to play

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis remains optimistic of signing a striker on loan after deciding against firming up his interest in Doncaster Rovers' Chris Brown. Davis was keen to bring in Brown, but the 26-year-old is still a few weeks away from full fitness after being sidelined since August with a knee injury. The League Two club have other targets lined up and Davis will continue pursuing his options ahead of next Thursday's loan deadline. "The Doncaster striker wasn't fit enough as he'd had a couple of injuries and it would have been four to six weeks before he was ready," said Davis in The Sentinel. "But we'll keep tabs with Dean Saunders (Doncaster manager) about his progress. "We're waiting to hear from someone about another striker who has been on the bench, but another club has first refusal on him. "And there's another lad at a League One club, so we'll keep trying. "We had a striker in our league, but we would have had to take him on loan with a view to keeping him permanently. "It's tougher than I thought, but I'm still hopeful we can do something before next Thursday."
