Defender puts pen to paper on a season-long loan at Palace

Crystal Palace have signed centre-half Aaron Martin from Premier League new boys Southampton on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old defender made 17 appearances for Nigel Adkins' side as they won promotion from the Championship last season. Crystal Palace finished 17th in the Championship and manager Dougie Freedman hopes Martin can help them to improve on that position next season. "Aaron is a player who I have watched since his non-league days and he has done very well since his move to Southampton," he told the club's official website. "He is a youngster who is a talented, hard-working centre half who is hungry for success and I see him playing a major role in our continued progress next season." Martin, who has been at Southampton for three years, had mutual admiration for his new manager. "Dougie seemed to sell the club so well and he seems a really nice person. For what he's already done (at Palace) he seems to be a great manager to work for and play for," he said. "What sold the club to me was that he was such a nice person and he sounded so genuine in everything he said to me. I can't wait to get started now."
