Michael Chopra can count on the support of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in his bid to represent the Indian national team.

The former Newcastle, Sunderland and Cardiff striker has embarked on a new chapter in his career with Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters who are co-owned by Tendulkar.

Chopra exclusively told Sky Sports in August of his desire to play for India and the 30-year-old has revealed he has since spoken to the ‘Master Blaster’ about his plans.

“It’s been such a pleasure to meet Sachin and it’s been really nice talking to him about football and my ambitions here in India.” Chopra told Sky Sports.

“He is willing to try and help me which is brilliant because he understands how passionate I am about helping develop football here in India and improving the players and making the national team better.

“To have someone like Sachin willing to help is special because he is a cricket legend and he is not only interesting in improving cricket, he is interested in improving football and sport as a whole in the country.

“He told me he’s read the stories about me wanting to play for India and he’s said he is willing to help me fulfill that desire if he can.”

Chopra admits only after coming to India does he fully appreciate the profile that Tendulkar enjoys.

“You don’t realise how big Sachin is until you are actually in India,” Chopra said.

“It’s one thing watching him hit fours and sixes on TV but when his face appears on the screens inside the stadium the crowd go absolutely wild.

“He’s achieved so much and he’s so dedicated and he’s worked so hard to build that stature.

“He’s told us about his work ethic during team meetings and we are desperate to do well for him.”
