Nottingham Forest have announced that Dougie Freedman is going to take over as manager of the club following the dismissal of Stuart Pearce.

It was announced on Sunday evening that Forest great Pearce had been relieved of his managerial duties after Saturday's 1-0 home loss to Millwall left the early pace-setters 12th in the table, following a run of just three wins in 21 matches.

And the club then released a statement later on which read: "Dougie Freedman has taken over at The City Ground with immediate effect.

"Freedman, who played for the Reds between 1998-2000, has previous experience of managing in the Championship after spells with Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers.

"The club will announce further details in due course."

Capped twice by Scotland during his playing days, the 40-year-old Freedman began his managerial career at Crystal Palace in January 2011.

Freedman made over 300 appearances for Palace during two stints at the club as a player and, having guided them clear of relegation from the Championship in 2011, he went on to lead them to the semi finals of the League Cup in 2012.

However, with Palace fourth in the standings in October 2012, Freedman moved to Bolton, who were down in 16th place.

Bolton ended up only missing out on the play-offs on goal difference in that campaign but were 14th last term and Freedman left by mutual consent last October, with the Trotters second bottom of the table after a poor start to the season.
