Championship: Greg Halford brought in as defensive cover for Brighton

Brighton boss Sami Hyypia says new loan signing Greg Halford has been brought in mainly as central-defensive cover.

Versatile Halford, who can also play at full-back and in midfield, this week moved to the Amex on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Hyypia swooped for the 29-year-old with Aaron Hughes currently ruled out with an ankle injury and fellow centre-halves Gordon Greer and Lewis Dunk both one caution away from a ban.

"I know he can play in other positions, but Aaron is injured and the other defenders are on four yellow cards," said Hyypia.

"Hopefully those yellows don't come in the same game and then we would lose both of them."

The Seagulls were boosted by the news Hughes did not suffer a broken ankle against Bournemouth last weekend, but the veteran Northern Irishman still faces a few weeks on the sidelines.

"With Aaron, his injury looks more positive than negative so he'll be back soon, but it's going to take some weeks," added Hyypia.

"We can't be exact, as the swelling is still there so he can't have a scan yet as you can't see through the swelling."
