Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman is to continue exploring the possibility of taking Greg Halford on loan from Nottingham Forest.

A deal for the versatile 29-year-old was lined up during the international break, only for an untimely injury to bring an end to talks.

Halford is nursing an ankle complaint, but the problem is not considered to be serious.

The kids have been put in and I’m not afraid to do that but there are times when you have to get someone more experienced to do a job

That means Freedman may look to re-open discussions once the former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portsmouth man is back to full fitness – with the loan window now in full swing.

He said on a possible deal: “We came very close to doing something.

“We spoke to Nottingham Forest and they were happy for him to get some games. We did a deal but Greg got injured in training.

“I think he has twisted his ankle, so it’s seven to 10 days he will be out and we can re-visit it.

“But right now we need to move on quickly. I am not a guy who lingers on it.”

Freedman is in need of experienced cover at the back, with youngsters Oscar Threlked and Hayden White promoted into the senior ranks action ahead of schedule.

Bolton remain anchored in the bottom three and still searching for their first Sky Bet Championship victory after a dull 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday

“The kids have been put in and I’m not afraid to do that but there are times when you have to get someone more experienced to do a job,” Freedman added on his problems at right-back.

“Both Oscar and Hayden have done okay, not fantastic, but definitely okay, but I have told them both that they have been thrown in too early.

“I think both of them will be good enough but I think it’s too early to be playing them for a long period of time.

“That’s why I wanted to bring Greg in to shore up that position, but it wasn’t to be.”
