England U21 international signs four-year deal to leave Chelsea

Michael Mancienne is looking forward to a 'great challenge' after completing his move to Hamburg on a four-year contract from Chelsea. Skysports.com revealed on Monday that the versatile 23-year-old was set to join Hamburg after spending the season on loan at Wolves. The England Under 21 international made 17 appearances for Wolves this term and was enjoying his third loan spell at Molineux. He had also previously had two stints on loan at Queens Park Rangers and made just six first-team appearances during his time at Chelsea. Mancienne underwent a medical at Hamburg on Tuesday before finalising a transfer which is believed to be worth in the region of £3million.

Fantastic fans

Capable of playing in defence or midfield, Mancienne expressed his delight at clinching a switch to the Bundesliga. "HSV is a big, well established club with fantastic fans," Mancienne told the club's official website. "It's a big challenge for me to be able to play for this club. "It would be great if I could play a part in helping Hamburg get back into Europe." Hamburg's sporting director Frank Arnesen knows Mancienne from his own time at Stamford Bridge and is happy to have added the player to the club's squad. Arnesen said: "I have followed his development for years and I've been aware of his great potential."
