Bristol City stretch lead to five points

A look back at Saturday's action from Sky Bet League One.

DON SAYS: You would definitely rather be top than bottom, and Steve Cotterill went on the record saying this is the kind of victory that wins championships. I know exactly what he means by that because it’s one of those games where Chesterfield were fantastic, played really well on the day, gave Bristol City one or two problems, but ultimately his team had to dig deep. They did that and got the three points, a big three points. You look at that top five and it’s very strong. There isn’t a team like a Wolves, who you felt were always going to run away with League One last season; anybody can put a run together. Bristol City have got a nice cushion but the clubs underneath – Swindon, MK Dons and Preston – have got two games in had, so Steve will be mindful of that.

Barnsley upset the odds against Bradford

Barnsley turned around a half-time deficit to defeat Yorkshire rivals Bradford 3-1 at Oakwell in League One.

DON SAYS: Barnsley had a terrible home record, Bradford prior to that were unbeaten away. After the game Phil Parkinson alluded to the fact he probably thought his players thought they’d won the game before they’d even started, and that’s a bad attitude to have and they paid the price for that. Barnsley played well. It’s massively important for them. All three relegated clubs have struggled at the start of this season – Doncaster and Yeovil particularly, surprisingly down at the bottom end – and Barnsley needed that. Just a bit of a momentum shift, and they needed that home victory. It’s been a couple of months since they’ve won at Oakwell, and of course any promotion bedrock has to be your home form. That’s something I’m sure Danny Wilson will be very pleased about.

Worthington resigns as York lose again

A look back at Saturday's action from Sky Bet League Two.

DON SAYS: This time last season they were down at the bottom, and they turned it around. But clearly Nigel doesn’t feel the same can happen. Ten seconds after York’s kick-off – he said afterwards it’s not a kick-off he’s ever seen his team do before – and your captain launches into a challenge already on a yellow card. They’re 1-0 up at the time, their captain gets sent off and they go and lose. It’s those little things that have probably made Nigel feel that this time he can’t turn it around the way they did last time. It’s a shame because he punched way above his weight last season – they got into the play-offs.

Appiah rocket sparks Cambridge rout of Oxford

Cambridge United came from behind to beat rivals Oxford United 5-1 at the Abbey Stadium in League Two.

DON SAYS: What a strike – he probably won’t hit a better one than that. Straight out of the sweet spot and it flies past the goalkeeper. While he’s been at Crystal Palace they’ve been a Championship team and he’s probably been closer to getting an opportunity there while they were there. But at this stage with Crystal Palace the kind of club they are – they’re spending money on bringing other strikers in – it’s restricting the chances. For somebody like him it’s invaluable he gets out there, gets games under his belt and gets goals. He seemed to be involved in absolutely everything that Cambridge did. Michael Appleton will have been pulling his hair out at the amount of time and space those goals were conceded in. Difficult times for Oxford – they finished eighth last season, one place outside the play-offs and now they find themselves second from bottom.
