Bristol City moved five points clear at the top of League 1 with a 3-1 away win at Doncaster on Tuesday.

The Robins made the trip knowing they had to take advantage of their game in hand over second-placed MK Dons and they secured all three points with an impressive first-half display.

Luke Freeman fired the visitors ahead with just 10 minutes on the clock after taking advantage of a lucky deflection when a misplaced pass from Aaron Wilbraham bounced off a defender straight to his feet.

City were by far the better side in the first half and they made it 2-0 from the penalty spot when Greg Cunningham slammed home the spot-kick after Paul Keegan had been judged to have fouled Kieran Agard.

Doncaster hit back strongly in the second half and substitute Curtis Main scored the goal of the game with a 20-yard thunderbolt, only for Wilbraham to add the third against the run of play with a low angled shot.

Swindon's promotion push is back on track after two goals from Australia international Massimo Luongo secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Bradford.

The former Tottenham midfielder skipped into the area and picked out the bottom corner to break the deadlock before rounding off another fine team move 11 minutes before the interval.

Billy Clarke reduced the deficit nine minutes after the break but he failed to stop the Robins from ending a run of three successive defeats.

Daniel Johnson scored the only goal of the game to keep Preston's own play-off push firmly on track against Walsall.

The on-loan Aston Villa man delivered all three points in the 18th minute when he converted Chris Humphrey's cut-back from close range. Paul Gallagher went agonisingly close to doubling his side's lead, only to rattle the crossbar.

On a night of few surprises Sheffield United tightened their grip on a play-off place with a 2-1 win at Rochdale.

Goals either side of the break from Marc McNulty and John Brayford made it four wins from the last five games for Nigel Clough's men while Dale had just Jack O'Connell's consolation to show for their efforts.

In the evening's other clash 10-man Barnsley battled to a 1-0 win at Scunthorpe thanks to Josh Scowen's first goal for the Tykes.

He pounced on a bad defensive error to curl a right-footed shot into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Luke Daniels.

Caretaker boss Mark Burton could eventually celebrate three points despite centre-back Jean Yves-M'voto being sent off in the 55th minute.
