MK Dons are hopeful of signing two Premier League youngsters on loan in the January transfer window.
Manager Paul Ince is working hard to conclude the deals and ideally wants the as-yet-unnamed players at the stadium:mk before the end of the week.
Assistant Karl Robinson confirmed talks are ongoing with several targets but insists the current squad are capable of challenging during the latter part of the season even if deals materialise.
He told the Milton Keynes Citizen: "We have some exciting players up our sleeves, but if they don't come to fruition, we're still very much happy with what we've got.
"We are always looking for players and if we want to take the club on to the next level then we can't relax on what we have got, we need to look for bigger and better things.
"We are clearly not a Charlton or Southampton or even Huddersfield and so we don't have the financial clout to spend a lot of money. But what we do is work extremely hard to get the best team for this club to take it forward."
Puncheon future unclear
One player being tipped to leave the Dons is Jason Puncheon.
The on-loan Plymouth midfielder's agent has revealed Dutch side FC Twente, managed by former England boss Steve McLaren, are keen to secure his services but Robinson is optimistic he will stay with the club until the summer.
"As far as we see it Puncheon is here until the end of the season but we're not naïve and know big clubs have come to watch him," he added.
"He is very talented and people don't realise the work that went into him coming here in the summer.
"He has a great relationship with the manager and the chairman and he is only playing well because of the support system he has got here."
Keen on Quashie return
Fellow loanee Nigel Quashie returned to parent-club West Ham at the start of the month but Robinson is eager for the midfielder to come back to Buckinghamshire for a second spell.
QPR are also thought to be in the hunt for the 31-year-old but Robinson said: "I spoke to Nigel, but West Ham's owners are out in Dubai and he is in limbo right now.
"He is not our player anymore, he has gone back to West Ham and he is just kind of caught in the middle of it.
"It was great having a player of his calibre here, but we can't relax and expect him to come back.
"It depends what West Ham want to do and if someone comes in with a lot more money.
"He was a fantastic servant to the club in the short time he was here and had nothing but good things to say about the place, so we'll keep in regular contact with him and see if something can be done."
