Defender makes loan move permanent

Gillingham have completed the permanent signing of defender Josh Gowling from Carlisle. Gowling, 25, has been on loan with the Gills since the middle of July and earlier this week extended that deal in order to play in Tuesday night's Carling Cup loss to Blackburn. And he has now put pen to paper on a permanent contract which will keep him with the Kent club until the summer of 2011. Gowling played on the left side in the opening five games of the season, but slotted in on his preferred right-hand side against Rovers and impressed manager Mark Stimson. Stimson said: "I thought Josh showed what he can be against Blackburn, which is a very good right centre-half. He played well and I was impressed with him. "He played on the right side and he looked natural, he looked totally different. He has moved across and done his best in that role and it's hard to criticise him."
