Gillingham are closing in on the signing of an unnamed striker and goalkeeper Alan Julian.

Striker and keeper deals in the offing

Gillingham are closing in on the signing of an unnamed striker, according to boss Mark Stimson. Stimson has repeatedly expressed his desire to lure a potent goalscorer to Priestfield in the wake of the club's relegation to League Two. The Gills boss admits talks are now in advanced stages with his mystery transfer target, who he would only say is currently with a League One club. "Talks are progressing well and we hope to have some news in the next week or two," said Stimson.

Keeper

Stimson is also hoping to secure the signature of goalkeeper Alan Julian by the weekend. The 25-year-old recently quit Stevenage and has been courted by a number of clubs. Stimson is keen to add the shot-stopper to his squad as he looks for competition for current Player of the Year Simon Royce. "If we can persuade him to sign for us then that would be a big plus for the club," Stimson told Kent Online. "He has been the best keeper in the Conference for the last three years but unfortunately he was under 24 and commanded a massive fee. "He'll provide great competition, he's young and he needs to make League appearances."

Maher talks

Stimson will also hold talks with free agent Kevin Maher next week in the hope of signing the experienced midfielder on a permanent basis. The 31-year-old had a brief loan spell at Priestfield at the end of the season and was released by Southend on Monday after spending a decade at the club. And Stimson is now hoping to snap up the former Tottenham trainee on a permanent deal. "There are a number of clubs interested in signing Kevin, but he knows the team and the set-up here and that will be an advantage," said Stimson. "We'll be holding talks with him next week. He's a player I'd very much like to bring to the club."
