Kevin Smith has the chance to resurrect his career with Dundee United after being handed a short-term deal.
Tangerines boss Craig Levein has given the 21-year-old a deal in order to see the youngster in reserve-team action.
The former Leeds and Sunderland man had been looking for a new club after departing Aldershot without making a single appearance.
Levein remembers Smith's ability from his time at Hearts and is keen to give the striker a chance to win a long-term contract.
"Kevin has been here for a while, looking to get over a knee injury," Levein told The Courier.
Fit enough
"But he's fit enough to play now and we've signed him on a contract until the end of the season so he can take part in reserve games.
"I remember him from Hearts, before he went down to England, and he was a good player, so I thought he deserved a chance here.
"He's looked good in training so far and we'll see how he gets on between now and the summer before deciding exactly what to do.
"The last year has been a write-off for him so I might give him a year's contract next season so he can get a crack at it."
