Lions boss Willie Donachie (pictured) made the decision after striker Darren Byfield was injured in their weekend victory over Swansea.
The striker is set to undergo scans, but the club fear will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Williams, who has scored once in his two appearances for League Two's bottom club, has returned to The Den ahead of their weekend clash with Nottingham Forest
"We're still awaiting the definitive diagnosis of Darren's injury but we are resigned to the fact he will be missing for some time," said Donachie.
"Marvin now has the chance to come back into things and I'm sure that he will relish the challenge."
