Tangerines boss sympathises with Portsmouth financial situation

Ian Holloway has played down speculation about Luke Varney re-signing for Blackpool from Portsmouth. The 29-year-old was on loan at Bloomfield Road from Derby last season and scored five goals during their one-year stay in the Premier League. Varney, however, joined Portsmouth last summer and the financial plight of the South Coast club means they are willing to offload players to reduce their wage bill. Holloway is considering bringing the former Crewe graduate back into the fold, but admits his salary and progress of the younger players at the club could make a deal difficult.

He told The Gazette: "We've obviously had Varney before, but that (bringing him back) might mean Tom Ince or Matt Phillips having to be left out and do I want to do that yet? Probably not ... who knows? "We couldn't afford (Varney) in the first place. Portsmouth paid him a lot more money, so he went there and now they can't afford to pay him either. How fair is that? It is mad. "But I feel for supporters of that club because what has happened isn't their fault."
