Mariners chief keen to improve midfield options

Grimsby Town boss Mike Newell is hoping to bring Leeds United midfielder Peter Sweeney back to Blundell Park. Sweeney finished the season on loan with the Mariners and made eight appearances for the League Two club. He did not make a first-team appearance for Leeds this term and has 12 months remaining on his Elland Road contract. Newell is keen to improve his midfield options and hopes to persuade the 24-year-old to return to Grimsby next season. "I've spoken to Sweens a few times and had a chat with him earlier this week, and he hasn't ruled anything out," Newell told the club's official website. "Obviously midfield is a priority and Peter Sweeney is certainly a player we would like to bring in."
