Leaders Chelsea claimed a last-gasp win over Everton as an injury-time goal gave them a 1-0 victory.
Everton looked to have done enough to claim a point in the early kick-off on Saturday, but Jose Mourinho's men emerged victorious as John Terry got a touch to Frank Lampard's free-kick and Tim Howard could only turn it into his own net.
Arsenal stayed within a point of Chelsea with a comfortable 4-1 win over
Sunderland at the Emirates with the recalled Olivier Giroud their match-winner.
The opening goal came just five minutes in, and it was a wonderful flowing move which saw Jack Wilshere flick the ball into the path of Giroud to stroke home.
The second came on the half-hour and was a defensive howler from Santiago Vergini as his pass back was straight to Giroud, who dispatched it past former Gunners keeper Vito Mannone.
Giroud then turned provider for third which arrived before the break as he played a lovely one-two with Tomas Rosicky, who dinked his finish over the despairing Mannone.
The scoring continued in the second half and on the hour Laurent Koscielny headed home a Santi Cazorla corner.
Sunderland did manage to claim a late goal when substitute Emanuele Giaccherini fired home a wonderful effort from 25 yards - but it was no more than a mere consolation.
Manchester City made sure of the status quo at the top after a hard fought 1-0 win over
Stoke City at the Etihad Stadium.
The only goal arrived 20 minutes from time and it was a lovely finish from Yaya Toure as he finished from close range after Aleksandar Kolarov drilled the ball into the six-yard box.
There was time for Edin Dzeko to produce one of the misses of the season as failed to connect from just two yards out.
West Ham moved into the top half of the Premier League after they came from behind to beat
Southampton 3-1 at Upton Park.
The Saints went ahead early on when an unmarked Maya Yoshida headed home after just eight minutes from Steve Davis' free-kick.
The Hammers, though, levelled not long after as Kevin Nolan's ball over the top broke the offside trap and Matt Jarvis took it down before finishing past Artur Boruc.
Yoshida then turned villain as he failed to clear Carlton Cole's header which rebounded off the post and the striker reacted quickest to turn it home.
The three points were secured on 71 minutes when Cole headed the ball down for Nolan, who produced an acrobatic finish to beat Boruc.
Hull City are just a point further back from West Ham after they hammered
Cardiff City 4-0 in South Wales.
Tom Huddlestone fired home the opener on 18 minutes after David Marshall saved well from Nikita Jelavic, albeit via a deflection off Andrew Taylor.
The second arrived before half time and was a nice move as Shane Long played it into Jelavic to fire home.
The third came on 57 minutes as an unmarked Jelavic rose to head home Liam Rosenior's cross, before Jake Livermore stroked home the fourth after a clinical counter-attack to seal a brilliant win for Steve Bruce's side.
Cardiff narrowly avoided bottom spot after
West Bromwich Albion claimed a 1-1 draw with
Fulham thanks to a late goal from Matej Vydra.
Fulham went ahead just before the half-hour mark as West Brom failed to clear Kieran Richardson's cross and it fell for Ashkan Dejagah on the edge of the box and he lashed it home.
Felix Magath looked to be on his way to an opening win, but with just five minutes left Vydra managed to squeeze a shot under Maarten Steklenburg to secure a precious point for Pepe Mel.
In the day's late game, Wayne Rooney added the gloss to the new contract he signed on Friday as he scored a fine goal in
Manchester United's 2-0 victory over
Crystal Palace.
Robin van Persie broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after Patrice Evra had been fouled by Marouane Chamakh.
Rooney then volleyed exquisitely into the top corner from Evra's cross six minutes later, as United sealed an important win and left Palace very much in the relegation scrap.
