Leicester have confirmed they will hold an internal inquiry into Danny Simpson’s recent conviction for domestic violence.

The club clarified its position a day after the City full-back was given a community service order - 300 hours of unpaid work - for assaulting his former girlfriend last December.

The former Manchester United player was found guilty last month, but his sentence on Monday has drawn strong criticism from Woman’s Aid, who said: “The sentence does not reflect the crime.”

Leicester released a statement saying: “Leicester City Football Club notes the sentence passed to Danny Simpson following his recent criminal conviction.

“Now that legal proceedings have concluded, Danny will be invited to contribute to an internal hearing in the coming days where the extent of any club disciplinary measures will be determined.”
