Gallen in fitness race

QPR captain Kevin Gallen is a major doubt for the start of the new season.

Queens Park Rangers captain Kevin Gallen is a major doubt for the start of the new Championship season.

The 30-year-old striker picked up a groin injury during QPR's pre-season tour of Italy and is now racing to be fit for the game against Burnley on August 5.

"Kevin will miss our next fixture of the Italy tour," said physio Prav Mathema.

"The focus now will be on intense treatment and rehab to enable him to be fit for the Burnley game."

The setback is especially cruel on Gallen, who was dogged by hamstring and back trouble last term and had been hoping to play a key role this time round.

Italian defender Mauro Milanese offered QPR a boost though, as he shook off the effects of a similar groin injury.

"On the bright side, Mauro has recovered from a groin injury and has come through fitness testing well," Mathema confirmed.
