Boro win in style; Grayson's men earn welcome three points

Southampton moved to the top of the table, but had to survive a scare at Ipswich, while West Ham picked up a comfortable three points away to Watford. Leeds earned up a much-needed win against Yorkshire rivals Hull City, and Middlesbrough came from a goal down to defeat Barnsley in style. Nottingham Forest scored a first league goal of the season in a success at Doncaster, Portsmouth's Dave Kitson came back to haunt Reading, and Crystal Palace stunned Coventry in injury-time. Two goals from Rickie Lambert and one from David Connolly seemed set to give Southampton a comfortable win at Ipswich, but Nigel Adkins' team had to survive a second-half fightback before eventually winning 5-2 to go top of the table. James Tomkins, Joey O'Brien, Carlton Cole, with his first goal since February, and Scott Parker all scored for West Ham to help Sam Allardyce's team to a 4-0 victory over Watford as the Hammers moving up 11 places to third position.

Responded

After Saturday's bad-tempered defeat at home to Middlesbrough left Leeds in the relegation zone, Simon Grayson's men responded in ideal fashion with a 4-1 win over Hull at Elland Road to secure their first league points of the season. Tony Mowbray's rampant Middlesbrough offered an indication of their promotion credentials as they recovered from an early Stephen McManus own-goal to complete a fully-deserved 3-1 win over Barnsley at Oakwell. In the late kick-off, Sean Scannell and Jermaine Easter both scored in injury-time to deny Coventry a first point of the season as Crystal Palace snatched a dramatic 2-1 win at Selhurst Park. Nottingham Forest had not scored in the league this season prior to kick-off at Doncaster, but Steve McClaren was able to celebrate after the unlikely source of Chris Gunter earned a 1-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium. Having been guilty of a horror-miss in the first half, striker Dave Kitson scored against former club Reading to give Portsmouth, who had not scored at Fratton Park since early April, a 1-0 win and an opening three points of the season.
